Holidays should be a time to relax and enjoy a break, but sometimes life conspires to put a spanner in the works. So here are a few ideas for homoeopathic remedies to relieve some of the health problems that may crop up during your holiday. Being armed with a few remedies before you go could save considerable time, money and heartache when you’re away. Even better, treat yourself to your very own homoeopathic remedy kit, complete with instruction booklet, and be prepared for whatever comes your way. Some homoeopathic remedies and creams can be bought from health-food shops, chemists etc, but for remedy kits call the Clinic for sizes and prices.

TRAVEL SICKNESS
Detailed below is the Homoeopathic Remedy name (in bold)
and symptoms the remedy is most adept at treating.
Borax Salivation, nausea, vomiting, trembling. Air travel. Fear of downward motion, extreme anxiety, sensitive to sudden noise. Worse from downward motion, turbulence/airpockets, noise, tobacco smoke.
Cocculus Copious salivation, nausea at the thought of food, inclination to vomit, hollow feeling, dizziness, unsteady gait, utter prostration, must lie down. Worse from sight/smell of food, open air, tobacco smoke, noise, jar. Better eating, lying down. N.B. good for jetlag too.
Nux vomica Horrible queasy nausea, gagging, retching, ineffectual vomiting, loathing of food/tobacco/coffee, feels bloated with constipation and indigestion, craves warmth. Worse from cold, after eating. Better rest, nap.
Petroleum Excess saliva, persistent nausea, pain in stomach, feeling of emptiness, vomiting, severe pain at back of neck, stiff neck muscles, dizziness. Worse from bright light, noise, smell of fuel, attempting to sit up. Better if can eat.
Travella A combination remedy made by Nelsons, available in Boots, health-food shops and many chemists. Great if you can’t decide what remedy you need!

FEAR OF FLYING
Borax See under ‘Travel Sickness’.
Aconite Very fearful, fear of death or in a crowd, panic attacks, extreme distress, looks anxious, shocked glassy stare, palpitations.
Gelsemium Depressed, wants to be alone, sluggish, shaky, exhausted, better for alcohol (Dutch courage!).
Arg nit Busy, hurried, cannot rest, over-talkative, nervousness, anxiety, trembling, debility, craves sweets, flatulence and diarrhoea, sleepless.

SUNSTROKE
Belladonna Full/fast pulse, face red/flushed, eyes dilated/bloodshot, possible fever, throbbing headache. Worse from noise, light, jarring, stooping.
Gelsemium Irritable, dizzy, right-sided headache. Worse humidity, light. Better open air.

INSECT BITES
N.B. Remove barb/sting first.
Arnica If there is shock or collapse. Especially for wasp stings. N.B. also good for jetlag.
Apis Especially bee stings or mosquitoes. Much swelling, redness, burning, itching. Worse from heat, touch/pressure. Better for cold. Also for anaphylactic shock.
Ledum Penetrating sting with pain/ irritation, but less hot, red and swollen than Apis.

FOOD POISONING
Arsenicum Simultaneous vomiting and diarrhoea (even after water), dark offensive stool with blood, burning pains in anus, rectum and stomach better for heat, very chilly and weak, thirsty (in sips), restless, anxious. From ice cream, off-meat, alcohol. Worse cold, night (midnight and after). Better heat, warm drinks.
China Vomiting and painless diarrhoea, undigested frothy yellow stool with much wind, colic, hiccough and belching, doesn’t digest, internal coldness, very weak, apathetic. From loss of fluids, fruit (unripe), tea, milk, beer. Worse cold, draughts touch, night after eating. Better hard pressure, bending double, fasting.
Pulsatilla Symptoms and stool very variable, nausea from warm drinks, thirstless, weepy, whiny, wanting sympathy. From overheating, excess starch or fatty rich food. Worse warmth, evening, eating. Better fresh air, cold e.g. air, drinks, food.

ALSO RECOMMENDED
Arnica cream for bruising
Hypercal cream (contains calendula and hypericum) for cuts, abrasions, eczema etc
Urtica urens cream for burns and sunburn
Pyrethrum spray for the relief of insect bites and stings.
